    Downlink Resource Scheduling in an LTE System

    The problem of allocating resources to multiple users on the downlink of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular communication system is discussed. An optimal (maximum throughput) multiuser scheduler is proposed and its performance is evaluated. Numerical results show that the system performance improves with increasing correlation among OFDMA subcarriers. It is found that a limited amount of feedback information can provide a relatively good performance. A sub-optimal scheduler with a lower computational complexity is also proposed, and shown to provide good performance. The sub-optimal scheme is especially attractive when the number of users is large, as the complexity of the optimal scheme may then be unacceptably high in many practical situations. The performance of a scheduler which addresses fairness among users is also presented

    On massless electron limit for a multispecies kinetic system with external magnetic field

    We consider a three-dimensional kinetic model for a two species plasma consisting of electrons and ions confined by an external nonconstant magnetic field. Then we derive a kinetic-fluid model when the mass ratio me/mim_e/m_i tends to zero. Each species initially obeys a Vlasov-type equation and the electrostatic coupling follows from a Poisson equation. In our modeling, ions are assumed non-collisional while a Fokker-Planck collision operator is taken into account in the electron equation. As the mass ratio tends to zero we show convergence to a new system where the macroscopic electron density satisfies an anisotropic drift-diffusion equation. To achieve this task, we overcome some specific technical issues of our model such as the strong effect of the magnetic field on electrons and the lack of regularity at the limit. With methods usually adapted to diffusion limit of collisional kinetic equations and including renormalized solutions, relative entropy dissipation and velocity averages, we establish the rigorous derivation of the limit model

    Genotype‐phenotype analysis of LMNA‐related diseases predicts phenotype‐selective alterations in lamin phosphorylation

    Laminopathies are rare diseases associated with mutations in LMNA, which encodes nuclear lamin A/C. LMNA variants lead to diverse tissue‐specific phenotypes including cardiomyopathy, lipodystrophy, myopathy, neuropathy, progeria, bone/skin disorders, and overlap syndromes. The mechanisms underlying these heterogeneous phenotypes remain poorly understood, although post‐translational modifications, including phosphorylation, are postulated as regulators of lamin function. We catalogued all known lamin A/C human mutations and their associated phenotypes, and systematically examined the putative role of phosphorylation in laminopathies. In silico prediction of specific LMNA mutant‐driven changes to lamin A phosphorylation and protein structure was performed using machine learning methods. Some of the predictions we generated were validated via assessment of ectopically expressed wild‐type and mutant LMNA. Our findings indicate phenotype‐ and mutant‐specific alterations in lamin phosphorylation, and that some changes in phosphorylation may occur independently of predicted changes in lamin protein structure.     True triaxial testing of geogrid for high speed railways

    This work describes a series of novel experimental tests to determine the potential of geogrids to confine granular layers within ballasted railway lines operating at speeds close to critical velocity. This is important because at low train speeds, vertical stresses are dominant, but when approaching critical velocity conditions, dynamic horizontal stress levels are magnified. Therefore the majority of previous geogrid investigations have been performed assuming constant horizontal stress levels, thus making them more relevant for lower speed lines. To investigate settlement under high relative train speeds, ballasted railway track samples were subject to combined vertical-horizontal cyclic loading. Three areas were explored: (1) the performance benefit from placing geogrid at the ballast-subballast interface, (2) the performance benefit from placing geogrid at the subballast-subgrade interface, (3) the effect of subgrade stiffness on geogrid performance at the subballast-subgrade interface. Testing was performed using a unique large-scale true triaxial apparatus which had the ability to vary stress levels in three Cartesian directions. Compared to the control conditions, the geogrid offered a settlement improvement of approximately 35% when placed at the ballast-subballast interface, and 10–15% when placed at the subballast-subgrade interface. Regarding subgrade CBR, it was found that the geogrid offered the greatest performance benefits when the subgrade was soft. Therefore it was concluded that for the ballasted rail structures under test, when subject to elevated levels of horizontal stress, geogrids reduced settlements compared to non-geogrid solutions

    Absence of keratin 8 or 18 promotes antimitochondrial autoantibody formation in aging male mice

    Human mutations in keratin 8 (K8) and keratin 18 (K18), the intermediate filament proteins of hepatocytes, predispose to several liver diseases. K8‐null mice develop chronic liver injury and fragile hepatocytes, dysfunctional mitochondria, and Th2‐type colitis. We tested the hypothesis that autoantibody formation accompanies the liver damage that associates with K8/K18 absence. Sera from wild‐type control, K8‐null, and K18‐null mice were analyzed by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence staining of cell and mouse tissue homogenates. Autoantibodies to several antigens were identified in 81 % of K8‐null male mice 8 mo or older. Similar autoantibodies were detected in aging K18‐null male mice that had a related liver phenotype but normal colon compared with K8‐null mice, suggesting that the autoantibodies are linked to liver rather than colonic disease. However, these autoantibodies were not observed in nontransgenic mice subjected to 4 chronic injury models. The autoantigens are ubiquitous and partition with mitochondria. Mass spectrometry and purified protein analysis identified, mitochondrial HMG‐CoA synthase, aldehyde dehydrogenase, and catalase as the primary autoantigens, and glutamate dehydrogenase and epoxide hydrolase‐2 as additional autoantigens. Therefore, absence of the hepatocyte keratins results in production of anti‐mitochondrial autoantibodies (AMA) that recognize proteins involved in energy metabolism and oxidative stress, raising the possibility that AMA may be found in patients with keratin mutations that associate with liver and other diseases.—Toivola, D.     Incidence of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Hospitalized Chinese Medical Patients and the Impact of DVT Prophylaxis

    Objective. To evaluate the incidence of deep vein thrombosis in hospitalized Chinese medical patients and the impact of DVT prophylaxis. Methods. All cases of confirmed proximal DVT from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2008 were reviewed retrospectively to determine the presence of risk factors and whether DVT developed: during hospitalization in medical wards or in case of readmission with a diagnosis of DVT within 14 days of discharge from a recent admission to medical wards. The impact of prophylaxis will be estimated by comparing the annual incidence of proximal DVT among medical patients hospitalized from 2005 to 2007 with that of 2008 (DVT prophylaxis commonly used). Results. From 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2008, 3938 Doppler ultrasound studies were performed for suspected DVT. Proximal DVT was diagnosed in 687 patients. The calculated incidence of proximal DVT among medical patients hospitalized for at least two days was 1.8%, 2%, and 1.7% for the year 2005, 2006, and 2007, respectively. The incidence was 1.1% for 2008 (P < .001). Conclusion. Proximal DVT was substantial in Chinese medical patients, and DVT prophylaxis might reduce such risk
